The Idiot by A3ulez The Idiot by A3ulez
I am a big fan of Dostoevsky. In fact, I'm such a fan of The Idiot I had to do this picture again-- at a more dynamic angle this time ;) (the old version is under "Ippolite's Dream"

This is Ippolit from The Idiot. He's 17 and has tuberculosis, so he's been rebelling against God and society. Then, after meeting Prince Myshkin, who Dostoevsky intends to represent Jesus, Ippolite has a dream in which there is a nasty little creature like this that could attack and kill him, but just when it's about to strike, his old dog bites it and dies in his place. And when he wakes up, Myshkin is at his side.

Yeah, I cut the area where I was going to draw the dog because the picture was very squarish again. I have a problem making them like that instead of with divine proportions ;) But yeah, I subbed it with St. Nicholas.

I think Ippolite's situation is very sad and an important issue for people struggling with religion-- an idea Dostoevsky really expands on with Ivan Karamazov. It made me happy for him that he grew closer to Myshkin =)

"He's 17 and has tuberculosis, so he's been rebelling against God and society." For some reason, this description made me LOL.

I really need to read this novel. Your fanart makes me eager to read more Russian literature. If only I had the time!

It's a fantastic one-- for Dostoevsky, this is a great balance between his religious symbolism and plot. Crime and Punishment was much more plot but with a religious theme, and Karamazov-- oh boy, heavy heavy symbolism. All fantastic, but this one is more of a novel, I think =)

And yes, Mr. D always seemed to be LOLing himself whenever he wrote his rebel characters, hehe =D
