Another Fracture


I walked
to the Summer Garden,
brushing my fingers
across the green heads of lions,
baring fangs
along a gate of iron.

Rain gently fell while
I crept through the exit
into the Summer Garden.
Though the summer heat grew fat,
pebbles crunched
beneath my feet
like cracking ice.

The grey sky hid God
from the marble gods below.
Naked bodies—with droplets
dripping along their white skin,
hanging from fingers, breasts—
became slick
and reflected my face.

In a circle stood twelve chairs,
each back—glass.
Bubbles and flecks of color,
floated as if in water,
and the forest—like plates of ice
on the Neva—cracked,
swam away inside the pane.

Looking at the Summer Garden,
I couldn’t think about the West,
but hoped that here I too
could shatter,
that Russia would
put me back together.

Я пошла
в Летний Сад,
с пальцами сметая
зелёные львов лица
обнажая клыки
по железным оградам.

Накрапывал дождь, пока
через выход вкралась я
в Летний Сад.
Хоть жирел жар лета,
галька скрипела
под ногами—
как раскалывающийся лёд

Серое небо скрыло Бога
от богов внизу из мрамора.
Голые тела с капельками,
стекающими по белой коже,
висящими с пальцев, грудей,
стали гладкими
и лицо моё отразили.

В круге стояли двенадцать стульев,
каждая спинка—cтеклянная.
Пузыри и пятна цветов,
словно в воде, плавали,
и лес, как листы льда
на Неве, раскалывался,
отплавал внутри, в стекле.

Cмотря на Летний Сад,
не могла о западе думать,
но наделась, что я здесь тоже
смогла бы разбыться,
что меня Россия
пересоставит.
