Literature Text

First born of the first born, Finwë
How the world seized your heart that sunless day,
Jewels imbedded ever in your fate

Varda spilling silver cross the skies, filling umber eyes,
Ush’ring forth the first of loving cries
Ela!

Upon the water, each reflected,
And caressing every gaping porcelain face,
Longing for such light, such holy, bright, and ethereal embrace

Who could know,
How the world was glowing
Across the sundering seas, all snowy
With the first stars ever seen?
Glittering with the light of the two trees

Laurelin, the golden tree, so lovely in the day
Her boughs adorned in clustered flowers ever in awave
Telperion, the silver tree, casting shadows in the night
From her crystal light does flow, flooding back the fright

Laurelin of Vána, who called upon the sun
She rose in glowing splendor when the first day was begun
Telperion the treasure, the pearl of midnight skies
Held upon the moon man's hand, as still the sleeping lie

First born of the first born, Finwë
And first to to die and fade
First born son to take your place
War has tainted every heart,
Has gravened every face
This was supposed to be the first of a set of three poems concerning some of the Elven kings in the Silmarillion. The third one ended up not really pertaining to a particular king, but I love them all the same. This one is my favorite.

Though I'm not familiar with the basis material of the poem (I started The Silmarillion a few years ago and, for some reason, never finished it), I must say that this is a well-written piece. Even for those who might not understand it, it flows very nicely. I like how some of the rhymes aren't exact, as well. :+fav:!
